PGI Terasele Dunării

PGI Terasele Dunării also known as "Wines of the Danube Terraces," is a Protected Geographical Indication designation for wines produced in Romania. Terasele Dunării refers to the terraced vineyards located along the Danube River in Romania.

The PGI Terasele Dunării designation ensures that the wines are made from grapes grown within the defined geographical boundaries of the Danube Terraces region. It guarantees that the grapes used in the production of these wines come from vineyards located along the terraces of the Danube River and adhere to specific cultivation practices and quality standards.

The wines produced under the PGI Terasele Dunării designation can include a variety of grape varieties, both red and white. Some of the popular grape varieties used in these wines include Fetească Neagră (black maiden), Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Riesling, among others.

These wines are known for their unique character and expression of the Danube Terraces terroir. The region's soil composition, climate, and proximity to the Danube River contribute to the distinct flavors and aromas found in the wines.

PDO Oltina Wine

Oltina is a wine region situated in South-East Romania, in the sunny historical region of Dobrogea. More exactly, this region lies between the Danube and the Bulgarian border and is outlined by the presence of a natural paradise.

An environment that consists of ponds full of fish, a huge variety of birds and animals, deciduous forests, land with acacia trees, and households with beehives full of honey. And precisely the grapevine element bounded the communities Ostrov, Băneasa, Oltina, and Aliman – forming Oltina DOC – throughout history. And this is not a random thing, taking into consideration that the Oltina DOC has an excellent climate for the grapevine growth:

soil formed of black earth, clay, and loess; altitude between 130 and 200 meters; the vines are planted on the slopes of the Danubian terraces with northern, north-eastern and northwest exposure; temperate-continental climate with an ideal level of humidity, warmth, sun, and rainfall.

Grape varieties that can be used to make wines with PDO "Oltina" are the following:

  • white varieties: Fetească alba, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Pinot gris, Muscat Ottonel, Fetească royal, Italian Riesling, Crimp.
  • red varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot noir, Merlot, Fetească neagră, Syrah, Burgundy
